The commitment of Hotel Mirage together with all the hotels of the Best Western group is supported by the scientific partner LifeGate and is developed in two projects.

StayPlasticLess
By joining the StayPlasticLess project, the Best Western Network aims to reduce the presence of disposable plastic. A commitment that will affect the amount of plastic waste produced daily and which will therefore have a positive impact on the environment.

The project is developed over three phases:

1 Education and sustainable purchases

2 Rating

3 Communication and involvement of guests

PHASE 1
The first phase of the project dedicated to hotel training is underway on how to reduce the use of plastic in the facility. The actions put in place are manifold and concern different areas, including:

Reduction of virgin plastic cups
Choice of sustainable products for the courtesy line
Use of electronic keys that guarantee the absence of waste during the absence of the guest
Replacement of old bulbs with LED bulbs
Choice of dishes and cutlery in durable or biodegradable and compostable materials
Reduction of water consumption in plastic bottles
Reduction of the use of virgin plastic bags
Elimination of plastic straws

STEP 2
At the end of the year, the hotels will receive a rating based on the virtuous actions taken and the responsibility taken towards this issue.

STEP 3
During the year, awareness campaigns will be activated that will involve guests and hotels in support of the project.

Stay PlasticLess completes the Stay for the Planet project, which for years has been an indication of Best Western's commitment to environmental sustainability.

Stay for the Planet
With Stay for the Planet, Best Western hotels are committed to the sustainable management of their business by monitoring consumption, implementing energy efficiency actions and reducing their environmental impact thanks to virtuous behavior.

The sustainability rating attributed by the LifeGate scientific committee expresses the number of leaves obtained by the hotel in terms of environmental performance based on five different impact areas:

Energy: sources and consumption of electricity and heating, energy efficiency of the building and equipment

Water: drinking water consumption (catering, bedrooms, services ...) and water saving

Waste: production and type of waste, management in disposal and prevention actions

Purchases: procurement of raw materials, service materials and durable goods with lower environmental impact

Behaviors: logistical organization of suppliers, management of personal and customer mobility, awareness of guests and link to sustainable initiatives in the area

The results achieved since 2012, the year the project began, to date consolidate BW's commitment to environmental sustainability:

Greenhouse Effect Potential: -21%
Energy requirement: -17%
Water Footprint: -26%.

What is LifeGate Seabin?

The Seabin of LifeGate is a waste collection bin that floats in surface water, capable of capturing about 1.5 kg of debris per day, or over 500 kg of waste per year, including microplastics from 5 to 2 mm in diameter and 0.3 mm microfibers.

The device can also capture many common wastes that end up in the seas such as cigarette butts, unfortunately they are also very present in our waters.
